 10 Useful Suggestions Writing a thesis is NOT easy. It is a right of passage which can actually be an opportunity to establish the groundwork for your career. Below are 10 basic suggestions you might consider: - Choose a topic you find meaningful. Make sure your topic is compelling & significant enough to keep your attention long-term. For better or worse, you are going to feel married to this task until its done, so choose wisely.
- Try to be unique. Consider putting a different spin on a topic that has been studied before. What variable (s) or social circumstance can you examine that will provide a unique perspective?
- Practice diplomacy. Like anything else in life, writing a thesis can have political implications! Try to avoid a subject that is too controversial, can restrict employment/publishing opportunities, or cause discomfort for your committee, respondents, or readers.
- Consider your committee. Choose a topic your advisor and key committee members find interesting and have some knowledge.
- Think Career. Choose a topic that will be helpful with your career plans and establishes a niche in your field.
- Choose a manageable topic. A done thesis is a good thesis. This is not the time to change the world. It is however the time to sharpen your own skills and make a contribution to your field, even if modest. Consider a topic area with which you already have practical knowledge and/or experience.
- Keep it simple for your sake. Avoid making your thesis so complicated that you remain in graduate school for an additional number of years or create more frustration in your personal life than is warranted.
- Clarity for the sake of others. A thesis is not a conversation with yourself. Your work should be clear enough to be understood by most readers, students, and practitioners in your chosen field.
- Carefully choose your study design. Many students try to avoid anything that requires numerical calculations or statistics. Truth is that quantitative studies are often more time efficient, cost effective, and easier to publish than qualitative studies. Learn the pros & cons of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method approaches before deciding on a study design.
- Take care of YOURSELF! Most students tend to neglect their well being during the thesis phase. It's important to consume healthy foods and fluids, sleep, exercise, and share time with people who are going to support your efforts during this difficult time!
